How to Find an Empty Classroom at UMich

MGuide checks every centrally scheduled classroom against the current class schedule. If a room is sitting empty, it tells you for how long.

During exam weeks the libraries run out of seats by mid-morning. Classrooms mostly don't. At almost any hour a good share of the rooms on campus have nothing scheduled in them, and an unscheduled classroom is a decent private study room: big tables, a whiteboard, usually a projector nobody is using.

The Open Rooms view exists for exactly this. It reads the Registrar's schedule of classes for the term and lists centrally scheduled rooms with no class in them right now, nearest first.

Finding a room

  1. Open the list

Go to mguide.app/open-rooms, or open Explore in the app and pick Open Classrooms. Free classrooms across campus load in one list.

  2. Decide how it sorts

If you share your location, the nearest rooms come first with a rough walking time next to each. If you don't, the rooms that stay free the longest come first instead. The distance sorting happens in your browser.

  3. Read the free window

'Empty rest of day' means no more classes meet there today. 'No classes today' means the room never had any. A timed window like 'Empty for 1h 20m' means a class arrives after that, so pick a room with enough runway for what you're doing.

  4. Check the room before walking

Tap a row to open the room itself: its full weekly schedule, the equipment in it, and the building on the map with walking directions.

When rooms are easiest to find. Before 10 a.m., and Friday afternoons. Class density falls off hard at both points. Whole lecture halls go quiet after the last Friday sections let out.

Is this allowed?

Yes. Unreserved classrooms are open to students between classes, and studying in them is long-standing practice. The etiquette is simple: if a class or a booked event shows up, pack up and go. The room page shows the next scheduled section, so you know your deadline before anyone walks in.

Good to know

How fresh is the data?

Schedules come from the Registrar's schedule of classes for the current term and are refreshed regularly. One-off bookings made outside the class schedule, like a review session or a student org meeting, may not show up. Once in a while a listed room turns out to be taken.

Are the rooms unlocked?

Most centrally scheduled classrooms stay unlocked while their building is open. When a building closes for the night, its rooms drop off the list.
